What is memory care for seniors - How to identify the signs

Updated: Apr 3, 2023

Memory care for seniors is a specialized type of care for those with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. The goal of memory care is to provide a safe, secure, and stimulating environment for seniors to help them maintain their sense of identity and continue functioning as independently as possible.

How to Identify the Signs of Memory Care Needs

Memory care needs can be difficult to identify, especially for those caring for a loved one with age-related cognitive decline. However, there are some key signs to look out for that may indicate memory care needs.

One of the most common signs of memory care needs is difficulty with everyday tasks, such as forgetting to take medication, having difficulty with shopping and paying bills, or having trouble with personal hygiene. Other signs of memory care needs include difficulty with verbal and nonverbal communication, confusion or disorientation, changes in mood or behavior, and decreased interest in activities that used to bring enjoyment.

If you are concerned that a loved one may have memory care needs, it is important to speak to their doctor to get a professional opinion. There are also resources available to help families find the right memory care services, if needed.
